A perfect smile doesn’t just happen by itself. It’s the product of meticulous care. Take these seven top tips to help ensure the best in oral health and hygiene for you and the whole family:

Tip One: Exercise Proper Tooth-Brushing Techniques

There is a right way and a wrong way to brush your teeth. Of course, the most incorrect way to brush your teeth is not to do it at all.

Brush your teeth at least once a day – though twice daily is even better to knock off the food particles, plaques, and acids that accumulate on your choppers and cause halitosis (bad breath) and worse dental problems.

Using a fluoride-infused toothpaste and a comfortable, sturdy toothbrush, position the bristles at a 45-degree angle near the gumline and brush the surfaces – outer, inner, and top – with a swirling, almost circular motion. Make sure to get every surface of each tooth.

One thing to avoid: Brushing too harshly. You can cause your own gums to bleed by pressing too hard, so be firm yet gentle when putting those bristles in contact with your teeth and gums.

A good toothbrushing session typically takes two or three minutes – time very well spent! When you’re done, rinse out your mouth with water, gargle, and spit . . . just like you were at an appointment in the office of your favorite dentist in Arlington VA!

Tip Two: Floss Regularly

Brush, then floss. Regular flossing eliminates nasty food particles stuck in areas between your teeth that brushing didn’t remove.

Pull out a few inches of dental floss, wrap each end around a finger on both hands, and work the line in between your teeth, reaching as far into both sides of the gum pockets as you comfortably can. Just like brushing, one key to effective flossing is to go deep enough to get rid of plaque-causing, teeth-discoloring dental calculus (tartar) hidden in that area between your teeth and gums . . . but not so deep you cut your gums, causing bleeding. Be your own dental patient and find that balance.

Tip Three: Remember the Tongue!

Some patients are surprised when dentists advice them to brush their tongues, but that practice is part of smart dental self-care. If you eat food – and we bet you do – bacteria take up residence on your tongue and may darken it. Not only is a dirty tongue a sign of poor cosmetic dentistry, it also doesn’t bode well for maintaining healthy teeth, either – since they’re so often in contact.

Use a specially made tongue scraper, or have another grooved-ridge toothbrush dedicated to tongue-cleaning. As always, it doesn’t take much pressure, so be gentle!

Tip Four: Make Anti-Plaque Mouthwash Part of Your Daily Routine

After you’ve brushed each tooth, scraped your tongue, flossed the area between teeth and gums, and rinsed/gargled/spit, top off the process and really earn your smile by swishing around a mouthful of mouthwash.

Anti-septic and anti-plaque mouthwash is a great way to add an additional layer of protection. It helps kill bacterial build-up that can lead to gingivitis and gum disease – and it gives your mouth a fresh, clean feeling that will only encourage you to smile!

Tip Five: Just Say No To Tobacco

There are a zillion reasons not to use tobacco – whether that’s cigars, cigarettes, or chaw. As one of the most experienced dentists in Arlington VA, Dr. Ahmadian of Arlington Advanced Dental Care advises tobacco-using patients to kick the habit for the good of their own oral health.

You’ve heard of teeth-whitening, right? It’s a standard offering of cosmetic dentistry. Well, using tobacco does the exact opposite – it’s like teeth darkening. Tobacco puts ugly stains on your formerly pearly whites, not to mention being a leading cause of mouth and jaw cancers. Plus, nobody ever said that tobacco breath smelled good.

Tip Six: Go Easy On Coffee, Alcohol, Soda & Sugars

Limit your intake of sugary drinks – in fact, it’s smart dental practice to reduce sugar in your overall diet. Soda, coffee, and alcoholic beverages tend to contain a lot of phosphorous which decreases calcium, and their high fructose content is a leading cause of tooth decay.

Plus, just like tobacco, sugary substances work against teeth-whitening by discoloring them with dyes and additives.

Want a delicious, healthful alternative? Milk is great, because it replenishes calcium that your teeth need to stay strong – and, of course, good old water is literally the stuff of life.

Tip Seven: Visit the Office of Arlington Advanced Dental Care for a Regular Six-Month Check-Up

Even if you and your family practice all the above just right, every day – you’ll still need to see your family dentist in Arlington VA for one visit every six months for a check-up.

Why? Because Arlington Advanced Dental Care is a state-of-the-art family dental office serving Arlington, Fairfax and Washington DC with a comprehensive lineup of on-site modern dental services that patients simply cannot provide to themselves.
